An eight-year hunt for the cells that drive the extreme childhood food allergy eosinophilic esophagitis has identified a potential new way to treat the disease while also raising questions about a dietary supplement often taken to reduce bowel inflammation.
The anxiety and behavioral issues associated with excess MeCP2 protein result from overexpression of two genes (Crh [corticotropin-releasing hormone] and Oprm 1 [mu-opioid receptor MOR 1]), which may point the way to treating these problems in patients with too much of the protein, said Baylor of Medicine scientists in a report that appears online in the journal Nature Genetics.
AstraZeneca and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) today announce an agreement to collaborate on drug-compound screening for leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and sleeping sickness, three neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) which together affect nearly 10 million people worldwide.
With cases of intentional misuse of alcohol-based hand sanitizers being widely reported, the American Cleaning Institute (ACI, formerly The Soap and Detergent Association) offered reminders that the products provide key benefits when properly used.
House Republicans issued a report Wednesday and plan to hold a hearing Friday to investigate AARP's support for the health law as well as the organization's business interests.
