NanoString Technologies, Inc., a provider of life science tools for translational research and molecular diagnostic products, today announced that it has received a Class III Medical Device License from Health Canada, clearing the company to market its Prosigna Breast Cancer Prognostic Gene Signature Assay for assessing a woman's 10-year risk of distant recurrence and accurately identifying the intrinsic biologic subtype of the tumor.
Research led by Shyamal Desai, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has discovered a key change in the body's defense system that increases the potential for breast cancer to spread to other parts of the body.
Billions of dollars have been spent on developing drugs and supplying them around the world, but which companies' drugs are actually making an impact? The Global Health Impact Index, headed by Binghamton University Associate Professor Nicole Hassoun and highlighted in a new article published Friday in PLOS ONE, addresses this issue by ranking pharmaceutical companies based on their drugs' impact on global health.
According to a new study from Norway up to a fourth of breast cancers found through mammograms are harmless and would not cause noticeable disease during the women's lifetimes. Such women are said to be over-diagnosed, because their cancers would not have caused symptoms or death. Over-diagnosis is a problem because women may receive tests and treatment they did not actually need.
In Eau Claire, Wisconsin, Rep. Ron Kind, D-Wis, encountered something Democrats may have become unaccustomed to: "a fairly even-tempered crowd" at an "intimate" town hall meeting, Roll Call reports. Kind voted against the reform proposal in the House Ways and Means Committee, but defended current incarnations of the overhaul package during a meeting with local business owners and state National Federation of Independent Business representatives.
