Sulfa drugs have traditionally been the most frequently prescribed antibiotics for women with uncomplicated UTIs. However, quinolone use has increased with the emergence of sulfa-resistant E. coli strains, which has been shown to approach 20% in some regions of the country.
Seasonal influenza vaccination may guard against stillbirth, a new study published in Clinical Infectious Diseases and available online suggests. Researchers in Western Australia analyzed data from nearly 60,000 births that occurred during the southern hemisphere's 2012 and 2013 seasonal influenza epidemics, and found that women who received the trivalent influenza vaccine during pregnancy were 51 percent less likely to experience a stillbirth than unvaccinated mothers.
Cambrex Corporation announced today that it won the Silver Innovation Award at the 2009 CPhI Event for its Continuous-Flow Microwave-Assisted Organic Synthesis (CFMAOS) technology. The award was accepted by Dr. Jayne E. Muir (Market Research & New Technologies - Europe), who presented the technology to a panel of judges at this important pharmaceutical ingredients exhibition in Madrid, Spain on October 13, 2009.
The FDA last month approved for use a small ingestible sensor that, when embedded into a pill, can help "keep track of whether a patient is taking their medicine on time," Reuters reports.
