It was the arrival of the second man in his early 20s gasping for air that alarmed Dr. Dixie Harris. Young patients rarely get so sick, so fast, with a severe lung illness, and this was her second case in a matter of days.
C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-INH) concentrate is an effective, well-tolerated therapy that rapidly relieves acute swelling attacks and successive attacks at any body location in patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE), a rare and serious genetic disorder, according to data presented today at the 2010 American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) Annual Meeting. Additional pharmacokinetic data presented at the meeting confirms that C1-INH concentrate has a longer half-life than other treatment options for HAE, which protects patients from rebound attacks.
Roche announced today that it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for its IgG Antibody to herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 assays for use on cobas modular platforms. The tests are intended for use with sexually active individuals and expectant mothers as an aid in the presumptive diagnosis of HSV-1 and HSV-2 infection.
A new research paper posted to the bioRxiv preprint server deals with the impact of these mutations on adaptive cellular immunity.
