Bristol-Myers Squibb Company and AstraZeneca today announced the commencement of the "Saxagliptin Assessment of Vascular Outcomes Recorded in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus" trial, a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled Phase 4 study, to evaluate treatment with ONGLYZA™ (saxagliptin), a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor, in adult type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
The pain of losing a body part is twofold, as the patients not only suffer from wound pain. Often they are also affected by so called phantom pain. Unlike bodily wounds which will eventually heal, phantom pain often lasts for years and sometimes a lifetime. "Phantom pain is very difficult to treat", says Professor Dr Thomas Weiss from the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena.

Researchers look to understand the causes of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), in the hope of finding new ways to treat the disease. A new study published online today (December 17th) in the Cell Press journal Neuron shows that a common gene mutation in ALS generates a deadly protein that may cause the damage in the brain that leads to ALS.
The financial contributions made some years ago by individuals and public administration bodies in the telemarathon solidarity events on the Basque Public Broadcasting Corporation (EiTB) and subsequently channelled through the Basque Foundation for Health Innovation and Research (BIOEF), has resulted in undertaking successful innovative research at the Cruces Hospital near Bilbao in the Basque province of Bizkaia, describing a new syndrome of limited family intellectual disability.
