A team of collaborating scientists at The Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, the Broad Institute in Boston, Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion (OAHPP) have sequenced almost 100 full genomes from three successive epidemics of flesh-eating bacteria.
One of the nation's leading writers on the use of naturopathic medicine has released a new book documenting groundbreaking studies on modified citrus pectin (MCP) and its application for addressing serious health issues like cancer, heart disease, chronic inflammation and fibrosis.
Since February 2002, nearly five million Burundians out of a total population of 6.9 million have had to cover the costs of their medical care. The government, which devotes the great majority of its budget to its war effort, intervenes only for salaries of medical personnel and financing of infrastructures.
An initial Congressional Budget Office estimate of a version of health reform legislation favored by House liberals puts the price-tag within reach of President Obama's stated $900 billion limit for the overhaul, The Washington Post reports.
University of Iowa neuroscientist John Wemmie, M.D., Ph.D., is interested in the effect of acid in the brain. His studies suggest that increased acidity or low pH, in the brain is linked to panic disorders, anxiety, and depression. But his work also suggests that changes in acidity are important for normal brain activity too.
