An analysis published June 25th in the open-access journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases highlights that diseases very similar to those plaguing Africa, Asia, and Latin America are also occurring frequently among the poorest people in the United States, especially women and children. These diseases - the "neglected infections of poverty" - are caused by chronic and debilitating parasitic, bacterial, and congenital infections.
The New York Times examines several studies published in the journals Nature and Science looking at how the H5N1 bird flu virus could mutate to become more virulent among humans and outlines the history of controversy surrounding the studies.
Presented today at the International Osteoporosis Foundation's (IOF) Worldwide Conference of Osteoporosis Patient Societies in Beijing, the 2009 IOF-AMGEN Health Professional Awareness Grants aim to support innovative and cost effective projects by IOF member societies that focus on improving knowledge and raising awareness of osteoporosis among clinicians and allied health professionals.
In current studies, the degeneration and protection measures in the distal end of the injured spinal cord and target organ muscle effector have scarcely been investigated. The distal end of the spinal cord and neuromuscular junction may develop secondary degenera-tion and damage following spinal cord injury because of the loss of neural connections.
Neither the 2007 nor the 2011 Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease classification systems have sufficient prognostic accuracy to predict mortality, a pooled analysis of individual patient data shows.
