In a retrospective study, investigators from New York University Langone Health found that the quantity of SARS-CoV-2 (viral load) collected from patients in the emergency department is significantly higher in patients with fewer or milder symptoms who did not require hospitalization-the opposite of what might be expected.
When the first U.S. case of a new coronavirus spreading throughout China was confirmed last week in Washington state, public health workers were well prepared to respond, building on lessons learned during the outbreak of measles that sickened 87 people in the state in 2019.
Nature has many examples of self-assembly, and bioengineers are interested in copying or manipulating these systems to create useful new materials or devices. Amyloid proteins, for example, can self-assemble into the tangled plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease - but similar proteins can also form very useful materials, such as spider silk, or biofilms around living cells.
Scientists at Cincinnati Children's just received a 5-year grant totaling $5.3 million from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to advance research into the relationship between air pollution and mental health in children and adolescents.
