Asymptomatic patients diagnosed with nonbulky follicular lymphoma, a slow-growing type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, have traditionally been watched for signs or symptoms of disease progression and then treated with a combination of rituximab and chemotherapy or rituximab alone for select cases. Recent trials have suggested a role for treatment of asymptomatic patients with single-agent rituximab followed by additional periodic dosing, called "maintenance therapy."
CryoLife, Inc., an implantable biological medical device and cardiovascular tissue processing company, announced today that revenues for the fourth quarter of 2009 increased 12 percent to a quarterly record of $28.6 million compared to $25.5 million for the fourth quarter of 2008. This was the 12th consecutive quarter of profitability for the Company.
Healthy children attending day-care centres have a significantly lower risk of getting diarrhoea or respiratory tract infections when given a daily supplement of Lactobacillus reuteri Protectis, a study in 336 children shows. "Our study confirms earlier published data in proving that preventive use of L. reuteri Protectis in healthy children reduces diarrhoeic episodes.
A team of researchers have shown that schizophrenia and a disorder associated with autism and learning difficulties share a common biological pathway. This is one of the first times that researchers have uncovered genetic evidence for the underlying causes of schizophrenia.
A federal judge Friday struck down a major provision of Texas's strict abortion law that would have forced all but a handful of clinics to close next week. The law, passed last year by the Republican legislature, required abortion facilities to meet state standards for ambulatory surgical centers. But U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel ruled the requirements violated a woman's right to terminate her pregnancy (Winter, 8/29).
