Researchers have developed the technology for a catheter-based device that would provide forward-looking, real-time, three-dimensional imaging from inside the heart, coronary arteries and peripheral blood vessels. With its volumetric imaging, the new device could better guide surgeons working in the heart, and potentially allow more of patients' clogged arteries to be cleared without major surgery.

BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib effective for patients with papillary thyroid cancer

Mutations in a gene that codes for the enzyme BRAF kinase have been associated with increased risk for papillary thyroid cancer. An early-stage clinical trial of the BRAF inhibitor vemurafenib resulted in either a partial response or stable disease in patients with PTC and BRAF mutations.

Vitamin D does not reduce risk of depression or mood changes

Several studies have shown that those with Vitamin D deficiency also have symptoms of depressive illness. The authors wrote, "Low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D have been associated with a higher risk for depression later in life, but there have been few long-term, high-dose large-scale trials."
