The Business Software Alliance (BSA), the voice of the world's commercial software industry, today announced a settlement with iCan Benefit Group of Boca Raton, FL. iCan Benefit paid $61,500 to BSA to settle claims that it had unlicensed copies of Adobe, Microsoft and Symantec software installed on its computers. As part of the settlement agreement, the company agreed to delete all unlicensed copies of software from its computers, acquire any licenses necessary to become compliant, and commit to implementing stronger software asset management (SAM) practices.
Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, today announced the successful completion of its tender offer through its subsidiary, Transformer Delaware Corp., to purchase all of the outstanding shares of common stock of Aspect Medical Systems, Inc. The tender offer expired at 12:00 midnight ET, at the end of November 5, 2009, and was not extended.
With a $4.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (under the Bioengineering Research Partnership program), research led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute will make its important final steps toward the development of a safer, synthetic alternative to current heparin. The researchers believe that kilogram quantities of the new drug could be developed in under five years.
The University of Twente carried out the first study worldwide that shows patients with COPD (lung disease caused by smoking) and other illnesses (heart disease, diabetes, anxiety and depression) have better outcomes if they follow a self-management program with a customized action plan. Anke Lenferink of UT recently obtained a doctoral degree on this subject.
