On November 6, 2013, the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, received laboratory accreditation with exemplary status through the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine's Electrodiagnostic Laboratory Accreditation Program. While the AANEM has accredited 156 electrodiagnostic laboratories in the United States since its 2011 launch, the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center is the first EDX laboratory outside of the country to receive accreditation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced unique challenges for public health practitioners and health communicators that warrant an expansion of existing health communication principles to take into consideration.
Chagas, which is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, affects 18 million people worldwide, but is particularly prevalent in Latin American countries, "where a bug called the vinchuga, sometimes known as the kissing bug, transmits the disease," the Atlantic reports. The parasite "remains dormant in peoples' bodies for up to 30 years, until it kills them suddenly by stopping their hearts or rupturing their intestines," the magazine writes.
Researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have successfully combined cellular therapy and gene therapy in a mouse-model system to develop a viable treatment strategy for breast cancer that has spread to a patient's brain.
