Researchers at Amgen are testing a fully human monoclonal antibody that inhibits the activity of insulin-like growth factors (IGF-1 and IGF-2) and appears to reduce pancreatic cancer cells in early testing, according to a report in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.
For the first time, Mayo Clinic researchers and colleagues present data on how nervous system tumors, called neuroblastomas, spread. Their paper, published in Cancer Cell, clarifies the relationship between two genes that fuel the aggressive spread of neuroblastomas.
BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. announced today that Firdapse™ (3,4-diaminopyridine) is now commercially available in the European Union (E.U.) for the treatment of the rare autoimmune disease Lambert Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS). Launching immediately in Germany and the UK, the company expects to subsequently launch Firdapse in all major European markets by the end of 2010.
The new wave of thinking effectively turns on its head the idea that healthcare innovation must always make something more high-tech, more sophisticated, more complex - and hence more expensive.
