Making tumor cells glow: Medical physicists at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) have developed a new method that can generate detailed three-dimensional images of the body's interior.
Anacor Pharmaceuticals, the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Sandler Center and the Lindsley F. Kimball Research Institute (LFKRI) of the New York Blood Center (NYBC) today announced the establishment of a research and development collaboration to discover new drug therapies for the treatment of river blindness (onchocerciasis), a parasitic disease that is the second leading cause of infectious blindness worldwide, and is most prevalent in Africa.
"One of the most urgent global public health problems is the increasing capability of bacteria to resist antibiotic drugs," a Washington Post editorial states.
Use of the targeted agent pacritinib significantly reduced the symptoms and burden of advanced myelofibrosis in patients, says a Mayo Clinic researcher who co-led PERSIST-1, the worldwide phase III clinical trial that tested the therapy. Specifically, pacritinib substantially reduced severe enlargement of the spleen, a typical feature of advanced myelofibrosis, in more than 20 percent of patients and alleviated debilitating side effects in more than 46 percent.
Having received clearance under Section 510(k) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Spacelabs Healthcare is adding the qube patient monitor to its Art of Monitoring portfolio. Inspired by the revolutionary style of the company's XPREZZON patient monitor, qube breaks with tradition to offer a fresh, new perspective in compact monitoring.
