A group of scientists from Spain, the UK and the United States has revealed the structure of a protein complex involved in liver and colon cancers. Both of these types of cancer are of significant social and clinical relevance as in 2012 alone, liver cancer was responsible for the second highest mortality rate worldwide, with colon cancer appearing third in the list.
New York Blood Center (NYBC), serving more than 20 million people in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, New Jersey, and parts of Connecticut and Pennsylvania, calls upon the communities it serves to please donate blood in honor and remembrance of the thousands of men, women, and children affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Each pint of blood donated can potentially save the lives of three people through the use of blood and blood products.
A new controversy is ripe, what with the head of the UK National Health Service (NHS), Simon Stevens, publicly expressing his "serious concerns" about the "fundamentally flawed" practice of homeopathy.
The six-site Consortium on the Genetics of Schizophrenia (COGS), led by the director of the Schizophrenia Program at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, has received a $10 million renewal grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), one of the National Institutes of Health. The grant funds an ongoing, multiple-site collaboration examining the genetic architecture of the causes and abnormalities related to schizophrenia.
A report published last week that found three researchers from Harvard Medical School were "vastly underreporting their income from drug companies" offers "striking proof that today's requirements for reporting payments from industry - essentially an honor system in which researchers are supposed to reveal their outside income to their institutions" - must "be strengthened," a New York Times editorial states.
