The need for blood never takes a vacation. Every two seconds, someone in our community needs blood. From premature infants to an organ transplant recipient who will typically require 40 units of blood to survive. And right now, the need is urgent. We are currently facing a shortage of Type 0 negative, the universal blood type that can be given to save the life of anyone, from premature infants and children having heart surgery to an organ transplant recipient who will typically require 40 units of blood to survive. Type B negative blood also is urgently needed.
Mississippi's Medicaid program "has a current $90 million shortfall, but what the program really needs is a fair, permanent, sustainable funding solution for the long term," Gov. Haley Barbour (R) writes in a Jackson Clarion-Ledger opinion piece.
Study results support the long-term use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate for chronic hepatitis B virus, showing that it can suppress the virus and lead to regression of fibrosis and cirrhosis in patients after 5 years' treatment.
Contrary to current guidelines, Mayo Clinic researchers have found that elective or primary (in patients who have had heart attacks) angioplasties performed at centers without on-site cardiac surgery capabilities pose no increased risk for patient death or emergency bypass surgery.
