How a building can improve health and healing after injury or illness is the focus of a study by Associate Professor Heidi Muenchberger, a recently announced recipient of the 2014 Australian-American Fulbright Commission Scholarships.
IsoRay, Inc. announced today another milestone in the use of Cesium-131 (Cs-131) brachytherapy seeds (internal radiation therapy). Doctors at a world renowned medical facility have performed the world's first Cs-131 brachytherapy seed implant following a wedge resection of a lung tumor which originated from a form of malignant uterine cancer. Initially used to treat primary cancers, Cs-131 seeds are now being used to treat metastasized cancer.
When it comes to body shape, diet and exercise can only take us so far. Our body shape and geometry are largely determined by genetic factors. Genetics also have an impact on our body composition - including soft fat tissue and hard bone tissue - and can lead to excess fat or osteoporosis.
In cancer cells, genetic errors wreak havoc. Misspelled genes, as well as structural variations - larger-scale rearrangements of DNA that can encompass large chunks of chromosomes - disturb carefully balanced mechanisms that have evolved to regulate cell growth.
Obesity is caused by numerous and complex factors, some of which are as yet unsuspected. Scientists from the CNRS, INSERM, UPMC and Université Paris Descartes, working with research clinicians from Paris Public Hospitals (AP-HP) have now shown that severe obesity is accompanied by inflammation of the small intestine and enhanced immune response in that region.
