Lixte Biotechnology Holdings announces that the United States Patent and Trademark Office awarded a patent for the use of lead compounds from each of two different types of drugs, protein phosphatase inhibitors and histone deacetylase inhibitors, for the potential prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.
It is estimated that as many as 80% of advanced-stage cancer patients may develop cachexia, a potentially fatal metabolic syndrome characterized by extreme weight loss and muscle wasting, but scientists do not yet fully understand why it is more frequently associated with certain kinds of tumor than others, or why not all cancer patients develop it.
A new study found that a common bacterium responsible for chest infections and sepsis in sick people, and which fails to respond to the strongest antibiotics, is spreading through hospital contacts.
Scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute have shown how aging cripples the production of new immune cells, decreasing the immune system's response to vaccines and putting the elderly at risk of infection.
