Scientists have calculated more precise measurements of heritability-the influence of underlying genes-in nine autoimmune diseases that begin in childhood. The research may strengthen researchers' abilities to better predict a child's risk for associated autoimmune diseases.
DaVita Inc., a leading provider of kidney care services for those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), today announced its nocturnal dialysis patient population has reached a milestone, with 1,000 patients having received this life-saving treatment in more than 90 DaVita(R) centers around the nation. DaVita has one of the largest nocturnal patient populations in the country.
The most recent results from a clinical trial show that ibrutinib, a newly approved drug for Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia, continued to control the rare blood cancer, with 95 percent of patients surviving for two years, report investigators from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
A Cedars-Sinai team of researchers led by principal investigator Dan Gazit, PhD, DMD, has been awarded a $5.18 million grant from California's stem cell research agency to advance stem cell technologies in segmental bone defects, a complex medical problem caused by large portions of bone tissue loss.
"Boosting women's access to reproductive health care could significantly reduce both the number of unsafe abortions and the high cost of post-abortion medical care in Uganda, experts say," IRIN reports.
