An 84 year old was complaining of repeatedly losing his balance and falling over. He visited his primary physician in Northern Ireland from where he was referred to the emergency room. On MRI, the team of doctors found a 3½-inch pocket of air in his brain. This has never been reported before in any case and thus the detailed report titled, "The man that lost (part of) his mind," was published in the journal BMJ Case Reports.
A vaccine to prevent dengue fever discovered by a Saint Louis University researcher in 1997 and now licensed worldwide by Sanofi Pasteur has been approved for use in Mexico. Dengvaxia is the world's first vaccine approved to prevent dengue fever, which is a virus spread by mosquitoes primarily in tropical and sub-tropical areas.
A new study has shown the ill effects of surgery in the elderly. Results of the Australian study shows that one in five older patients will suffer complications from surgery and one in 20 will die within 30 days. Lead author and Associate Professor David Story from the University of Sydney and his team looked at more than 4,100 patients aged over 70 for the study.
Orthopedic surgeon Paul Cooper, MD, says, "In the 12 years I've been a foot and ankle surgeon, this is the most exciting thing I've been able to offer my patients."
Barr Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today confirmed that its subsidiary, Barr Laboratories, Inc., has initiated a challenge of the patents listed by Endo Pharmaceuticals Inc. in connection with its Opana(R) ER (oxymorphone hydrochloride) extended-release tablets, 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg and 40 mg.
