The rising global burden of chronic diseases needs a coordinated effort from policy makers, advocates and health professionals, according to a special communication in the June 2 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a theme issue on Global Health.
Implementing an out-of hospital stroke policy in some Chicago hospitals was associated with significant improvements in emergency medical services use and increased intravenous tissue plasminogen activator use at primary stroke centers, according to a study published by JAMA Neurology.
In a new study that could have implications for future drug discovery efforts for a number of neurodegenerative diseases, scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have found that the interaction between a pair of brain proteins has a substantial and previously unrecognized effect on memory formation.
Responding to the release of the British Social Attitudes survey by the King's Fund and Nuffield Trust which shows falling levels of patient satisfaction with the NHS, Dr Chaand Nagpaul, BMA Chair of Council, said: Patients are being treated in hospitals that have had years of neglect and by a health service that we know is grossly underfunded.
Researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have identified a long-sought "master switch" in mice for the production of brown fat, a type of adipose tissue that generates heat and counters obesity caused by overeating.
