BrainTrust Canada, a community rehabilitation organization dedicated to being a leader in brain injury prevention, is launching a national online contest for youth 13 and older in Canada called Sponsor My Head.
A clinical trial in which healthy adults will be deliberately infected with influenza virus under carefully controlled conditions is recruiting volunteers at four Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Units (VTEUs) supported by NIH's National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The process of metastasis requires that cancer cells traveling from a primary tumor find a hospitable environment in which to implant themselves and grow. A new study from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center researchers finds that circulating tumor cells prepare this environment by bringing along from their original site noncancerous cells that support tumor growth. The report has been published online in PNAS Early Edition.
Community-based HIV testing programs generally use only HIV antibody testing, but nucleic acid testing can detect the presence of HIV earlier. Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine studied more than 3,000 patients who sought HIV testing in community-based clinics in or near San Diego to examine the yield of testing with a rapid test plus NAT and to see whether patients would be willing to access their results by phone or computer.
Over a three-year period, Faisal Ahmad Khan and his fellow researchers have taken samples from various sites along the River Svartån and in the Lake Hjälmaren – including both upstream and downstream the river from the city centre; in Hemfjärden where the river flows into the lake; as well as in the water by the treatment plant in Örebro.
