New research has shed light on the origins of a fungal infection which is one of the major causes of death from AIDS-related illnesses. The study, published today in the journal PLoS Pathogens, funded by the Wellcome Trust and the BBSRC, shows how the more virulent forms of Cryptococcus neoformans evolved and spread out of Africa and into Asia.
CEFALY Technology announced today that its received U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of the Cefaly medical device for the preventative treatment for migraine headaches. Cefaly is the first transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) device specifically authorized for use prior to the onset of pain. It is expected to be available in the U.S. in early April.
It has long been known that so-called place cells in the human hippocampus are responsible for coding one's position in space.
The rising cost of using these "me-too" drugs at prices far exceeding those of time-tested competitors deserves careful scrutiny, say the authors, based at the University of British Columbia in Canada, where spending on drugs doubled between 1996 and 2003.
