The Life Sciences Discovery Fund (LSDF) today announced a $5 million grant to Seattle-based Omeros Corporation (NASDAQ: OMER) to discover, develop, and commercialize new drugs to treat a variety of major diseases. With successful generation of proceeds through partnering and the sales of drugs in the marketplace, an additional outcome of the grant would be establishment of a new non-profit initiative to advance the life sciences sector and improve health and economic growth in Washington state.
A new Phase I clinical trial sponsored by the Vermont Cancer Center at the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care has opened to test the investigational drug DFMO, or alpha-difluoromethylornithine, as a treatment for the pediatric cancer neuroblastoma.
Slugs secrete biological defensive mucus that has now inspired a new type of surgical glue, prepared by researchers. This "bio-glue" has three main properties, it can move with the body, it is incredibly strong and it can stick to wet surfaces. The results of this breakthrough are published this week in the journal Science.
Usually starting as a blemish, skin cancer can quickly develop and spread to other parts of the body. The deadliest form of skin cancer, melanoma proliferates rapidly through the lymph nodes, affecting important internal organs. The disease can be variable, wherein some cancer cells never metastasize to the blood and lymph nodes and throughout the body, while others, tend to metastasize.
