A $2.5 million federal grant will allow a multidisciplinary team at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston to provide prevention and treatment information about HIV, AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases to underserved individuals with substance abuse or mental disorders.
It is estimated that as many as 80% of advanced-stage cancer patients may develop cachexia, a potentially fatal metabolic syndrome characterized by extreme weight loss and muscle wasting, but scientists do not yet fully understand why it is more frequently associated with certain kinds of tumor than others, or why not all cancer patients develop it.
Synageva BioPharma Corp., a biopharmaceutical company developing therapeutic products for rare diseases, announced three poster presentations at the National Lipid Association annual meeting held in Las Vegas, Nevada, May 30- June 2, 2013, as well as a Synageva-sponsored satellite symposium held on Friday, May 31, 2013.

TB remains one of the most devastating global health crises today, with ripple effects that extend beyond health to cripple prosperity and development of regions overwhelmed by the disease."
The Karmanos Cancer Institute and Wayne State University School of Medicine will launch the nation's largest study of African American cancer survivors to better understand disproportionately high incidence and mortality from cancer and its impact on this specific patient population.
