Synageva BioPharma Corp., a privately held biopharmaceutical company, announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted orphan drug designation for SBC-102, the Company's enzyme replacement therapy in development to treat Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency, also known as Wolman Disease and Cholesteryl Ester Storage Disease, a condition for which there is currently no approved treatment.
Drug-induced liver disease (DILD), a potential complication seen with some medications, is usually not life-threatening, but may occasionally be more severe with a high mortality, requiring a liver transplant in selected cases.
According to the World Health Organization more than three hundred million people worldwide are affected by major depressive disorder. Unfortunately, the antidepressants commonly used to treat them only work for 50% of the population.
"Syrians are in urgent need of life-saving medicines following an escalation in fighting, which also threatens further food shortages, U.N. agencies warned on Tuesday," Agence France-Presse reports.
