Drinking alcohol can increase the risk of illness and death from the hepatitis C virus. A new national household study of U.S. adults published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that many people living with hepatitis C report either former or current excessive alcohol use.
Every year, more than 120 million prescriptions are written worldwide for thiazide drugs, a group of salt-lowering medicines used to treat high blood pressure. These drugs are often work very well, and over decades have saved hundreds of thousands of lives.
Iowa lawmakers are the latest to consider defunding Planned Parenthood over the organization's performance of abortions, though the proposal died on the last day of the legislative session. Elsewhere, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signs a bill allowing employers to opt out of covering contraception in their insurance plans.
Parents however will be allowed choose to opt out of the scheme, run by primary care trusts, which along with the National Health Service (NHS) provides services to primary schools.
