The study, which appears in the June 9, 2014 issue of the American Heart Association's journal Circulation, is the first in which researchers quantified cumulative radiation doses in pediatric heart patients and predicted lifetime cancer risks based on the types of exposures.
Underscoring that a sudden cardiac arrest emergency requires quick response and that automated external defibrillators are easy to use, the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association has launched a unique community response team with the Amish community of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, at the center of a broad program that will deploy AEDs in public locations, schools and even on horse and buggies and Amish farms to protect the community's residents and visitors from the nation's leading cause of death.
Anti-tumor necrosis factor medications are effective in controlling chronic inflammatory diseases, but some physicians recommend that their patients discontinue them during pregnancy.
A two-year, multi-center clinical study with 167 patients with class III-IV refractory angina randomized to low and high dose CD34+ cells or placebo has revealed that patients who received either a high or low dose of CD34 - a member of a family of proteins that have an impact on vascular-associated tissue - cells had a significant reduction in angina frequency over patients who received placebo.
