Poor food choices, such as overconsumption of carbonated soft drinks, are an important factor driving the global obesity epidemic and have been linked directly to diabetes and heart disease. But now, using the same digital data employed by marketers to promote food products, McGill University's David Buckeridge has developed a way for health agencies to track Montreal consumers' food choices, neighborhood by neighborhood.
The old cotton patient gowns and warmed cotton blankets are history in St. Francis' Procedural Services Department. Surgery patients can now control their warmth while wearing the Bair Paws patient adjustable warming system. The Bair Paws system combines forced-air warming and patient gowning in one step.
A bacterium engineered to produce different pigments in response to varying levels of a micronutrient in blood samples could give health officials an inexpensive way to detect nutritional deficiencies in resource-limited areas of the world.
