Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most significant forms of neurotrauma with major economic and social impact.
A study from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that a new drug for Huntington's disease - pridopidine or dopamine stabiliser ACR16 - might operate via previously unknown mechanisms of action. Researchers have found that at very low concentrations, ACR16 binds to the sigma-1 receptor, a protein in the brain important to neuronal function and survival.
The prevalence of unrecognized myocardial infarction by cardiac magnetic resonance in elderly patients is higher than that of recognized MI and is associated with increased mortality, say researchers.
Hospital news from around the country includes: concern in Mass. about the bottom line, mergers in Georgia and more about Dallas' troubled Parkland facility.
In the future, diagnosing severe personality disorders, evaluating the childhood environment, assessing alcohol consumption and the analysis of the MAOA genotype may provide more accurate means for assessing risk among violent offenders, according to the Finnish research carried out jointly at the University of Helsinki and the Helsinki University Central Hospital Psychiatry Centre.
