A recently published editorial in the Journal of the American Society of Hypertension (JASH), "Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring Should Be Included in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES)," recognizes the importance of this national survey instrument but questions the efficiency of its diagnostic methods in assessing hypertension in the population.
Over 9,000 people across Cheshire and Merseyside joined a quarter of a million people in the UK choosing to turn their back on cigarettes this month in the mass 28-day stop smoking challenge, Stoptober. In Merseyside, 7187 people signed up along with 1,288 people in Cheshire West and Chester.
"The annual number of children who die before they reach age five is shrinking, falling to 7.6 million global deaths in 2010 from more than 12 million in 1990, UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday" in their annual report on child mortality, Reuters reports. "Overall, 12,000 fewer children under age five die each day than a decade ago," according to the report, the news agency notes.
Immediate relatives (brother, sister, mother, father, son or daughter) of people who have Parkinson's disease are at increased risk for developing depression and anxiety disorders, according to a new study by Mayo Clinic.
According to Dr. Daniel Weiss, a recent study of heart rate autonomic markers, and cardiac mortality published in the November issue of Heart Rhythm provides additional support for the usefulness of heart rate variability as a diagnostic for identifying dysfunction (neuropathy in diabetics and others) and cardiovascular mortality, including fatal arrhythmia or sudden cardiac death.
