The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today released a new report showing that the Affordable Care Act provides states with significant flexibility and resources to improve health care benefits and protect consumers. Already, the law has provided or offered $2.8 billion in funding to States. This is a fraction of the total funding available under the law to help States implement new consumer protections, expand health coverage, and improve health care quality.

Growing eggs and sperm to treat infertility

Scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, have reported, in the journal Cell Reports, the mechanism of how the very early precursor or stem cells which eventually give rise to the germ cells, eggs and sperm, are formed over the course of development. This could help create eggs and sperms under laboratory conditions to help infertile people who don't have sperms, or eggs, for instance.

Pharmaceuticals to provide safe needle collection and disposal programs for patients

It is illegal in the state of California to unsafely dispose of "sharps" (medical waste such as needles and syringes) in the home, and thanks to California State Senator Joe Simitian's Senate Bill 486, and contributors from his annual "There Oughta Be A Law" contest, 1 million Californians will not be breaking the law anymore (see http://www.ciwmb.ca.gov/hhw/sharps/).
