AVEO Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on discovering, developing and commercializing cancer therapeutics, today announced that AVEO has regained worldwide rights from Merck (through its subsidiary, Schering Corporation) to develop and commercialize AV-299 (also known as SCH 900105), its anti-hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) antibody candidate.
It is essential that Congress extend the unemployment insurance and COBRA safety net programs that are part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act past their current expiration date of Feb. 28. If Emergency Unemployment Compensation and full federal funding of the Extended Benefit program are not extended, 400,000 Americans will lose these vital benefits during the first couple of weeks in March.
The push is on to enroll thousands of children who previously could not get health coverage or whose parents paid much higher premiums because of their children's pre-existing medical conditions. Under new federal rules that took effect last fall, children with chronic health conditions cannot be denied coverage.
But in the midst of all the uncertainty, administration officials are moving steadily ahead in their efforts to shore up political support for the law while implementing as many of the substantive policy changes as they can. Those dual missions are sometimes in conflict. Officials at the Department of Health and Human Services face pressure to cement the foundation of the law in ways that would be difficult to reverse.
