Despite researchers' best efforts, no drug exists that can slow, halt or reverse the onslaught of Alzheimer's disease. A progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disorder, Alzheimer's has stolen the memories and livelihoods of millions-leaving patients and their families struggling to cope with the disease's devastating consequences. But today, scientists at the Gladstone Institutes propose a new research avenue that has the potential to change all that.
In the first study to directly compare men and women with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, and severe emphysema, researchers have found that there are marked differences between the sexes.
For years, patients with an eye disease called keratoconus have had little to no hope of continuing to see well without glasses or contacts, and a portion of them had a high risk corneal transplant in their future. Keratoconus is an eye disease that causes the cornea (the clear covering on the eye) to become thin and steep over time. Patients with keratoconus can wear special contact lenses or in some cases glasses. Many of them lose the ability to see well even with corrective eye wear.
Recent food crises have highlighted the sharp need for the prevention of possible adulteration of suppliers' milk through the implementation of integrated chain management principles. As part of the dairy sector's commitment to food safety, the International Dairy Federation (IDF) has just released a new publication on "Integrated Supply Chain Management".
