A well-known paper-based medical chart used by pediatric emergency personnel across America is undergoing a 21st century boost in an collaborative effort between Virginia Tech's College of Engineering, Roanoke-based Carilion Clinic Children's Hospital, and the physician who created the original method some 25 years ago.
Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) is a heritable disorder characterized by increased bone fragility. In OI Type IV muscle weakness has important functional consequences. Children and adolescents with OI type IV often have restricted mobility despite multidisciplinary treatment with bisphosphonates, intramedullary rodding surgery and rehabilitation.
Genomic studies have illuminated the ways in which malfunctioning genes can drive cancer growth while stunting the therapeutic effects of chemotherapy and other treatments. But new findings from Weill Cornell Medical College investigators indicate that these genes are only partly to blame for why treatment that was at one point effective ultimately fails for about 40 percent of patients diagnosed with the most common form of non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Researchers at the Institute of Molecular Biology in Mainz, Germany, have made a breakthrough in understanding the origin of the aging process. They have identified that genes belonging to a process called autophagy - one of the cells most critical survival processes - promote health and fitness in young worms but drive the process of aging later in life.
