This week 23andMe (a genetic testing company) and Genentech (medical research company of the Roche Group) agreed a collaboration to undertake whole genome sequencing for 3,000 patients with Parkinson's disease. The genetic information will be collected by 23andMe and used by Genentech to identify new therapeutic targets for treating Parkinson's disease.
The Associated Press: "Five years after the court fight over allowing Terri Schiavo to die, most Americans still don't draft the legal documents that spell out how far caregivers should go to keep them alive artificially. Schiavo's life and death captivated the country and fueled conversations about the necessity of the documents, known as advance directives or living wills.
Fewer Americans fear root canal treatment, according to a recent survey by the American Association of Endodontists. Just over half of those surveyed, 54 percent, said root canals make them apprehensive, down from 60 percent in 2013, and the lowest numbers reported since the AAE began its annual survey in 2011.
The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (GW) today released a report representing consensus findings from a cross-section of stakeholders that could help transform the process used to evaluate interventions to treat obesity, a public health crisis that now affects one in three adults. The report, "Obesity Drug Outcome Measures," results from a stakeholder dialogue group convened by GW that, over a period of nine months, explored why development and approval of obesity drugs have proven so difficult.
