Using an innovative device with microscopic chambers, researchers from four institutions, including Johns Hopkins, have gleaned important new information about how bacteria survive in hostile environments by forming antibiotic-resistant communities called biofilms.
A recent trial has shown that heart and lungs from donors infected with hepatitis C can be safely transplanted, without recipients becoming infected with the virus.
Up to £2 Million is being made available today to tackle the most common cause of food poisoning in the UK - Campylobacter. Three of the UK's main public funders of food safety research have come together to invite research proposals to find out more about the organism and how best to control it. To provide safe and nutritious food for a growing world population it is important to reduce the incidence of food poisoning. Campylobacter species are responsible for more than 300,000 cases of food poisoning a year in England and Wales.
DiaTech Oncology announced today they have engaged in a pilot with Walter Reed Army Medical Center to determine the best Chemotherapy for Cancer patients. Medical and GYN Oncologists and from Walter Reed have been working with DiaTech Oncology (Nashville, TN) using the MiCK assay for apoptosis in order to give physicians a tool that can predict the best chemotherapy pathway in treating cancer patients.
In a breakthrough, Australian researchers have developed a method to boost the immune system. This technique is seen to be capable of clearing an "HIV-like" infection from a mouse. This could in future lead to a cure for HIV and other chronic viral infections in humans. The findings from Melbourne's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute are centred on a naturally occurring cell signalling hormone called interleukin-7 (IL-7).
