On Friday, October 2, 2009, Alberta Health Services and the Alberta Children's Hospital Foundation will host an Open House and "House Warming" Celebration for Rotary/Flames House - the first hospice for children in this province. The facility is only the sixth of its kind in North America and will help families caring for children with progressive and life-threatening illnesses.

Investigators at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital have discovered the role of several key genes in the development of the retina, and in the process have taken a significant step toward understanding how to prevent or cure the potentially deadly eye cancer retinoblastoma.
A new biosensor, applied to the human skin like a temporary tattoo, can alert marathoners, competitive bikers and other "extreme" athletes that they're about to "bonk," or "hit the wall," scientists are reporting. The study, in ACS' journal Analytical Chemistry, describes the first human tests of the sensor, which also could help soldiers and others who engage in intense exercise - and their trainers - monitor stamina and fitness.
