Chemists from Far Eastern Federal University's School of Natural Sciences developed a new method to synthesize biologically active derivatives of fascaplysin - cytotoxic pigment of a sea sponge. For the first time, they got a sufficient amount of 3-bromofascaplysin and 3,10-dibromofascaplysin, which were known before but were not available for study.
Today, Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture), joined by leaders from the Group Against Smog and Pollution (GASP) and Clean Water Action, along with Dr. Evelyn O. Talbott of the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health Department of Epidemiology and Allegheny County Council President Richard Fitzgerald, announced a major new campaign to reduce the fine soot pollution responsible for Pittsburgh's number one ranking for dirtiest air for two years running.
Focal choroidal excavation appears to be relatively common and can have a detrimental effect on vision, a study of Korean patients suggests.
