"The president of the World Bank has warned that ending the worst of global poverty within a generation would prove a tougher challenge than tackling AIDS, as he urged direct action to help more than a billion people benefit from growth," The Guardian reports.
It has been more than 50 years since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last approved a new medicine specifically for lupus – when Dwight D. Eisenhower was president. Existing treatments have been "borrowed" from other disorders and the risk/benefit ratio of these treatments is far from optimal. However, hope is on the horizon.
Chimpanzees from African sanctuaries carry drug-resistant, human-associated strains of the bacteria Staphlyococcus aureus, a pathogen that the infected chimpanzees could spread to endangered wild ape populations if they were reintroduced to their natural habitat, a new study shows.
The measure, which did not get the two-thirds majority needed under special procedural rules, would have banned abortion in the District after 20 weeks of pregnancy based on a disputed notion that fetus at that point can feel pain.
With the recent opening of the Vanderbilt Marfan Syndrome and Aortic Disorders Center, the state's only comprehensive clinic serving entire families, hundreds of patients with connective tissue disorders now have a one-stop shop for health care.
