Scientists have restored the sense of smell in mice through gene therapy for the first time - a hopeful sign for people who can't smell anything from birth or lose it due to disease.
Saint Marys Hospital and Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital recently received re-verification as Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma centers, respectively, by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). The ACS verification recognizes Mayo Clinic's dedication to providing the highest-quality trauma care for all injured patients. Mayo Eugenio Litta Children's Hospital is the first children's hospital in Minnesota to receive verification as an independent level one pediatric trauma center.
When a coronary artery is obstructed by atheroma, blood flow is depressed or even arrested. This causes hypoxia of cardiac cells associated with the deprivation of nutrients. In clinic, the first objective is to restore blood flow. However, this is associated with a burst in oxidation of cellular proteins and lipids. This oxidation enhances cell death and participates to the so-called reperfusion injury.
