Consider two children who have childhood absence epilepsy (CAE), the most common form of pediatric epilepsy. They both take the same drug-one child sees an improvement in their seizures, but the other does not.
Two thirds of breast cancers are ERalpha-positive, i.e., many estrogen receptors of the ERalpha- type are found in their cells. "These molecules can interact with the estrogen hormone and, thus, even lead to cancer," explains Dr. Joerg Hoheisel; molecular biologist at DKFZ. "The connection between the levels of the estrogen receptor alpha and the occurrence of breast cancer has been known for some time now.
There is only scant scientific evidence available on whether the genetic risk for developing specific psychiatric disorders or cognitive traits is manifest in brain structure from childhood and, to date, studies have focused primarily on adult populations. The question remains unanswered.
The Childress Institute for Pediatric Trauma has partnered with the Pediatric Trauma Society (PTS) to co-host a national pediatric trauma conference at Graylyn International Conference Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
