An Andalusian team of researchers led by the University of Granada has demonstrated the efficacy of a new drug against cancerogenic stem cells, which cause the onset and development of cancer, of relapse after chemotherapy and metastasis. This drug, called Bozepinib, has proved to be effective in tests with mice.
A new technique that converts stem cells into brain cells has been developed by researchers at Lund University. The method is simpler, quicker and safer than previous research has shown and opens the doors to a shorter route to clinical cell transplants.
IT and medical-technology company Sectra's (STO:SECTB) net sales for the first half of the fiscal year increased 4.9% to SEK 391.7 million (373.4) compared with the year-earlier period. Operating profit rose 87.5% to SEK 16.5 million (8.8), corresponding to an operating margin of 4.2% (2.4). Profit after net financial items amounted to SEK 4.4 million (48.2), corresponding to a profit margin of 1.1% (12.9).
Childhood obesity is a widespread global epidemic and in parallel with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is now the leading cause of liver disease among children. New data presented today at the International Liver Congress- 2012 furthers this concern by showing that childhood obesity is positively linked with developing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) - the most common form of liver cancer - in adulthood.
To help scientists and science trainees who hope to translate laboratory research into clinical medicine and to help minority scientists navigate their career paths, AAAS, Science Careers, and Science are launching a pair of online social-networking sites.
