New Australian research predicts that children who are fat can expect to die four years earlier than their thinner peers.
LeapFrog Investments, the world's first microinsurance fund, announced today that it has surged past its $100 million target capitalization, months ahead of schedule. The fund invests in high-growth, high-impact insurance and financial services companies in countries including India, the Philippines, South Africa, Kenya, and Ghana.
About 20 million Europeans are subject to food allergies. Now scientists are looking at these allergies in new ways. It involves the food industry in its work and pays special attention to the link between early diets and allergy in later life. Clare Mills, professor of allergy in the university's Institute of Inflammation and Repair, at the University of Manchester, UK, is the coordinator of iFAAM.
Most religions teach their followers to "Love thy neighbor" - including those of different races, nationalities or beliefs. But is religiousness really related to love of neighbors?
"More than 26 percent of married women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo want to avoid pregnancy but aren't using a modern method of family planning," Christopher Hook, program assistant for USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health, writes in the agency's "IMPACTblog," adding, "Furthermore, meeting this demand for family planning is not an easy task in the DRC, where deep-seated traditional and religious views exist around family size, gender roles and the use of contraception."
