Through work carried out in connection with her PhD, Tone Bjordal Johansen has shown that Mycobacterium avium does not infect pigs via birds, as previously believed. M. avium can be divided into several subspecies, and the research shows that birds are infected by one particular subspecies, whereas pigs and humans are infected by another.
Women on Long Island who don't have insurance or who are underinsured may be able to take advantage of free mammograms at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Commack. The Center has contracted with the New York State Cancer Services Program (CSP) of Western Suffolk County to provide breast cancer screening at no cost to patients who are uninsured or underinsured and meet certain eligibility criteria.
Although women have little or no control over some of the risk factors for breast cancer, such as those related to aging and genetics, they may be able to reduce their chances for developing the disease by avoiding certain environmental risks. BREAST CANCER AND THE ENVIRONMENT: A LIFE COURSE APPROACH, a new report from the Institute of Medicine, assesses the breast cancer risk posed by various environmental factors, identifies actions that offer potential to reduce women's risk for the disease, and recommends targets for future research.
