States and territories are eligible for up to $40 million to strengthen and coordinate efforts to prevent chronic disease, the Health and Human Services Department announced Tuesday. The initiative is funded by the healthcare reform law and targets the nation's five leading chronic diseases: heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes and arthritis.
BiondVax Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercializing immunomodulation therapies for infectious diseases, today announced that it has been invited to present in a workshop organized by EDUFULVAC, (EDUcate inFLUenza VACcine) a corresponding European Consortium coordinated by the European Vaccine Initiative (Germany) and NIAID (the National Instituteof Allergy and Infectious Diseases, a National Institute of Health branch) in the United States.
This event will shine a light on one of the United States' most deadly and overlooked epidemics. Lung cancer kills approximately 160,000 Americans annually - more than breast, prostate and colon cancers combined - and has the worst survival rate of all cancers.
A recent CDC report on HIV/AIDS in the U.S. - which found that about 56,000 new HIV infections occur in the U.S. each year - "should serve as a wake-up call from the AIDS amnesia surrounding the domestic epidemic in recent years," Susan Blumenthal, senior policy and medical adviser at the Foundation for AIDS Research, and Melissa Shive, a former research assistant at amfAR and medical student at the University of California-San Francisco, write in a Washington Times opinion piece.
