Now that the CMS has released its final rule on the "meaningful use" criteria for Electronic Medical Record systems, what should hospitals do next? Researchers at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center have designed a strategy to treat obesity through "molecular liposuction." The therapy destroys blood vessels supporting fat accumulation — causing the fat to rapidly break down and disappear.
"Chagas disease - a parasitic infection transmitted through an insect commonly known as the 'kissing bug' - is one of the most common infections among pregnant women in the Western Hemisphere," Peter Hotez, president of the Sabin Vaccine Institute and director of the Sabin Vaccine Institute and Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, writes in the Huffington Post's "Global Motherhood" blog.
The problem of toxic algae is not just confined to the Nordic countries - in India algal blooms are threatening poor people's access to food and their livelihoods, a problem that has been exacerbated by global warming. With funding from the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, researchers from the University of Gothenburg are to attempt to reduce the effects of algal blooms.
