Advancing age is a major risk factor for Alzheimer's disease and is associated with build- up of the peptide amyloid β in the brain. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal Fluids and Barriers of the CNS shows that removal of amyloid β from the brain depends on vitamin D and also on an age-related alteration in the production of transporter proteins which move amyloid β in and out of the brain.
Scientists from the RIKEN Center for Life Science Technology in Japan have used a new non-invasive PET scanning technique to obtain images of neuron proliferation in the subventricular zone and subgranular zone of the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus is known to be particularly affected by depression.
A patented Indiana University School of Medicine discovery that uses proteins, lipids and nucleic acids secreted by adult stem cells to treat Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, or ARDS, has been optioned to Theratome Bio, an Indianapolis-based life sciences company.
