Douglas Smith, MD, director of the Center for Brain Injury and Repair and professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, will present information on the molecular mechanism at play in mild TBI (mTBI), commonly called concussions. Although mTBI affects over 1 million people each year in the United States, it is generally ignored as a major health issue. However, this 'mild' form of injury induces persisting neurological and cognitive problems in many of these patients, exacting an enormous emotional and financial toll on society.
The Annual Surveillance Report on HIV, viral hepatitis and sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in Australia was released and it revealed that there is a rise in diagnosis of gonorrhea and syphilis but the number of people being affected by HIV has plateaued. In addition tens of thousands of people have been cured of Hepatitis C. The report comes from the Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney.
New findings about a fatal form of blood cancer could aid the development of new drugs with significantly less harmful side effects than existing chemotherapy.
A new, continuous flow heart pump, or left ventricular assist device (LVAD), delivered better two-year survival in advanced heart failure patients than the current pulsatile model, researchers reported in a late-breaking clinical trial presentation at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2009.
Liver diseases are clinically important health problems and are generally underappreciated. The University of Louisville has brought together a critical mass of investigators to study liver diseases in a comprehensive fashion.
