In a rigorous study of tumor tissue collected from 125 patients with aggressive brain cancers, researchers at Johns Hopkins say they have found no evidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and conclude that a link between the two diseases, as claimed by earlier reports, likely does not exist.
Between the demands of work, family and friends, many women find health takes a back seat. Women with HIV are no exception. "Many women with the HIV face challenges from sleepless nights to little personal time-all activities that can negatively impact health," says Allison Webel, a clinical research scholar and instructor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University.
New research has shown that women who are heavy smokers before menopause, especially prior to giving birth, may significantly increase their risk of developing breast cancer. In the US study looking at almost 150,000 women from the Nurses' Health Study; it was found that breast cancer rates increased with higher levels of smoking among younger age groups. The study appeared in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine.
According to research presented at the Nov 2011, American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting in Chicago, a type of computed tomography scanning (commonly called CT scans) appears to help in the diagnosis of gout by detecting the urate crystals that are often a symptom of the disease.
Virginia Tech researchers successfully used a gene disruption technique to change the eye color of a mosquito - a critical step toward new genetic strategies aimed at disrupting the transmission of diseases such as dengue fever.
